Yuri’s ride  was basic, but effective. Put a man in a pebble. Put the pebble on a rocket and launch it. The pebble comes back down and have the man eject prior to hitting the Soviet plains. I love 60s style cutaways and this is a pretty good one.

His didn’t go right either. Engine didn’t burn completely due to a faulty valve. The service module then failed to separate per program and eventually found its own way off later. He landed 300 km short, but very near a steep slope and closer than they intended to a river. Also, his main seat parachute and backup deployed, so that was a mess. When he landed in a potato field he was greeted by a farmer and her daughter. They kindly offered him some milk.

 - fun fact, iOS has an emoji for an enjection seat.
